Bhubaneswar : India’s young archery sensation Sharvari Somnath Shende emerged victorious at the 2025 World Youth Archery Championships held in Winnipeg, Canada, by winning the U18 women’s individual recurve gold medal. The 16-year-old from Pune showcased remarkable skill and composure in a fiercely contested final against South Korea’s Kim Yewon.
Shende dominated early in the match by winning two of the first three sets and drawing one, taking a 4-1 lead. However, Kim Yewon mounted a spirited comeback by winning the next two sets, leveling the match at 5-5. The championship was ultimately decided by a thrilling shoot-off where Kim scored nine points, but Sharvari held her nerve and shot a perfect 10 to claim the title.
This achievement makes Sharvari only the second Indian woman to win gold in this prestigious category at the World Youth Championships. In addition to her individual success, Sharvari Shende, along with teammates Gatha Khadke from Solapur and Jiyana Kumar from Chandigarh, had earlier won the bronze medal in the U18 women’s recurve team event.
The World Youth Archery Championships also saw Indian men’s compound teams achieving gold in both Under-18 and Under-21 categories, highlighting a strong overall performance by the nation in the tournament.
Sharvari’s stellar performance is a proud moment for Indian archery, signaling the rise of new talent on the global stage and promising a bright future ahead for the sport in the country.
