India Fall Short in 3–4 Thriller Against Argentina in FIH Pro League
Amstelveen, June 11, 2025 — India’s men’s hockey team suffered a narrow 3–4 defeat to Argentina in their latest FIH Pro League fixture at the Wagener Stadium in the Netherlands. Despite a fighting performance and three equalising goals, defensive lapses at crucial moments cost India the match.
Argentina struck early, capitalising on an Indian error in the third minute. A poor clearance from Amit Rohidas allowed Matías Rey to find the net, giving Argentina an early 1–0 lead. However, India responded quickly, with captain Harmanpreet Singh converting a penalty corner in the 12th minute to draw level.
The second quarter followed a similar script. Argentina regained the lead in the 17th minute through Lucas Martínez, before Harmanpreet equalised again in the third quarter via a penalty stroke, bringing the score to 2–2. But just a minute later, Argentina punished India again, as Santiago Tarazona slotted home in the 34th minute.
Abhishek gave India renewed hope with a quick goal in the 43rd minute, finishing from close range after a rebound. Yet, Argentina found the winner almost immediately after the start of the fourth quarter. Lucio Méndez’s goal in the 46th minute proved decisive as India failed to respond a fourth time.
This was India’s third consecutive defeat in the Pro League’s European leg, following losses to the Netherlands. While Harmanpreet Singh continued his impressive form with two goals, the Indian defence looked shaky, especially during transitions and quarter restarts.
With this result, both India and Argentina are tied at 15 points on the league table, although Argentina have played two games more. The Netherlands remain at the top of the standings with 23 points.
India will next face Argentina again on June 13 in a critical rematch. Coach Craig Fulton will hope for a more composed start and better defensive cohesion as India looks to stop their slide in the standings.
Final Score: India 3–4 Argentina
India Goals: Harmanpreet Singh (12’, 33’), Abhishek (43’)
Argentina Goals: Matías Rey (3’), Lucas Martínez (17’), Santiago Tarazona (34’), Lucio Méndez (46’)
