London, UK – Football fans are being urged to exercise extreme caution when purchasing match tickets online, as a new study reveals an estimated £2.5 million has been lost to ticket fraudsters over the past two seasons. Lloyds Bank’s analysis indicates that at least 12,000 supporters have fallen victim to these scams in the last two campaigns, with their own customers accounting for approximately £500,000 in losses.
The Modus Operandi of Scammers
Fraudsters often exploit the high demand for sold-out matches, offering tickets online, frequently at discounted prices, to lure unsuspecting fans. Social media platforms are highlighted as the primary breeding ground for these scams. Victims typically pay upfront, often via bank transfer, only for the tickets to never materialize, with the scammer disappearing.
“Stop! Think Fraud” Campaign Launched
In response to the growing threat, the ‘Stop! Think Fraud’ campaign has been established to raise awareness about online purchase scams. Experts, including Lord Hanson, the minister for fraud at the Home Office, advise supporters to “only buy directly from clubs, their official partners and legitimate resale outlets.”
Who is Most at Risk?
The study identified specific demographics and fan bases more susceptible to these fraudulent activities:
- Most Targeted Clubs: Supporters of Liverpool were most likely to be targeted, followed by fans of Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea. Cases also involved fans of Celtic, Rangers, and Wrexham AFC.
- Age Demographics: Fans aged 25-34 were the most frequent victims, making up 28% of cases, closely followed by those aged 18-24 (26%).8Future Measures: Digital Ticketing to Combat Touting
Looking ahead, new Premier League rules set to be introduced for the 2026-27 season will mandate clubs to offer 70% of their tickets digitally. This move is aimed at providing a greater defense against ticket touting and enhancing security for genuine supporters. However, fans are reminded that while digital tickets offer enhanced security, vigilance remains key.
Fans are advised to remain alert, avoid deals that seem “too good to be true,” and always verify the legitimacy of sellers to prevent financial loss and disappointment.
