London, UK- The opening match of The Hundred 2025, played on Tuesday, August 5th, at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, delivered both thrilling cricket and a moment of pure, unscripted animal magic. During the men’s match between defending champions Oval Invincibles and London Spirit, a fox made an unexpected appearance on the hallowed turf.
The incident occurred during the Invincibles’ run chase, just as London Spirit pacer Daniel Worrall was about to deliver a ball. The wild visitor sprinted across the field, captivating players, the crowd, and even the commentators, Eoin Morgan and Stuart Broad, who were left amused and wondering how to coax it off the ground. Thankfully, the fox found its own way off the field, much to the delight and loud cheers of the Lord’s crowd, ensuring a memorable start to the tournament.
Defending Champions Oval Invincibles Dominate London Spirit
While the fox stole some headlines, the on-field action saw the Oval Invincibles secure a comfortable victory over the London Spirit.
London Spirit’s Batting Collapse: London Spirit captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that quickly proved to be a mistake. The Spirit’s top order crumbled cheaply, with Keaton Jennings and David Warner falling early, followed by Williamson himself. The Invincibles’ bowlers, particularly Afghanistan’s spin wizard Rashid Khan and England’s all-rounder Sam Curran, wreaked havoc. Both bowlers claimed three wickets each, dismantling the Spirit’s batting line-up. London Spirit were eventually bowled out for a paltry 80 runs in just 94 balls. Rashid Khan’s economical spell of 3 wickets for 11 runs was particularly impactful and earned him the Hero of the Match award.
Oval Invincibles’ Measured Chase: In response to the modest target of 81, the Oval Invincibles started steadily. While the London Spirit managed to chip away a few wickets, it proved to be mere consolation. Captain Sam Billings and Donovan Ferreira calmly finished off the chase, securing a six-wicket victory for the Invincibles with 31 balls to spare.
This dominant performance allowed the Oval Invincibles to begin their title defense on a strong note, demonstrating why they are the reigning champions.
Upcoming Fixtures
Looking ahead, the Oval Invincibles will next play the Manchester Originals at The Oval on Saturday, August 9th. Meanwhile, the London Spirit will travel to Cardiff on the same date to take on the Welsh Fire, hoping to bounce back from their opening defeat.
