Odisha, Bhubaneshwar– Although evidence-based nutrition plays a crucial role in high-level football, numerous Premier League players still exhibit inadequate dietary practices. A recent study investigated the reasons why UEFA’s Consensus Statement on Nutrition isn’t being fully adopted by EPL clubs.
Twelve leading sports nutritionists from Premier League teams participated in interviews utilizing the COM-B model and Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to pinpoint factors that facilitate or impede their ability to implement the guidelines. Thematic analysis identified six primary obstacles and two facilitators related to psychological capability, opportunity, and motivation.
Nutritionists indicated challenges in modifying player behaviours, doubts regarding specific guidelines (particularly concerning carbohydrates and body composition), and a lack of time or resources for continuous professional growth. Many also encountered limitations in their autonomy, often influenced by the culture within the club. Notably, having strong interpersonal skills—especially among female practitioners—was found to be a significant facilitator, although maneuvering through male-dominated environments presented additional social hurdles.
The study concludes that to enhance adherence to guidelines in elite football, it is essential to empower practitioners by granting them greater autonomy, fostering belief in the guidelines, promoting ongoing education, and building the confidence required to instigate change.
