Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – The 31st edition of the FIBA Asia Cup is set to begin in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, August 5. Sixteen national teams from across the continent will battle for the prestigious continental honours, culminating in the final on August 17. The tournament, held quadrennially, returns to its regular cycle after the previous 2022 edition was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reigning Champions and Historical Dominance
Australia enters the tournament as the formidable two-time defending champion, having clinched back-to-back titles, most recently triumphing over Lebanon in the thrilling 2022 final. Their consistent performance since joining the Asia-Oceania region has made them a dominant force. Meanwhile, China stands as the most successful team in the competition’s history, boasting an impressive 16 titles to their name, a testament to their long-standing basketball prowess in Asia.
Tournament Format and Road to Glory
The FIBA Asia Cup 2025 will feature a clear path to the championship. The 16 participating teams have been divided into four groups of four.
- Group A: Qatar, Australia, South Korea, Lebanon
- Group B: Guam, Japan, Syria, Iran
- Group C: China, Jordan, India, Saudi Arabia
- Group D: Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, Iraq, Philippines
Following the group stage, the group toppers will automatically advance to the quarterfinals. The teams finishing in second and third place within their respective groups will then compete in crossover playoff matches to fill the remaining four quarterfinal spots. Winners of the quarterfinals will progress to the semifinals, with the victors battling it out in the grand finale for the championship. The losing semifinalists will play for a third-place finish.
