In a recent interview with Sportstar, the Indian boxing sensation shared her renewed determination to clinch more medals and fulfill her ultimate Olympic aspirations.
Bouncing Back from Injury and Renewed Hunger
Zareen, who secured gold medals at the World Championships in Istanbul (2022) and New Delhi (2023), revealed the physical and mental hurdles she faced during her recovery from a meniscus injury. The setback required several months of dedicated rehabilitation, testing her resolve. Despite the challenges, Zareen asserted her strong state of mind.
“I want to bring back that old Nikhat who used to win medals at the World Championship. I want to bring back that old Nikhat who has that hunger to win medals at the Worlds,” she told Sportstar, emphasizing her desire to return to her winning ways. Her comeback trail saw her impress at the Elite Women’s Boxing Tournament before an injury forced her withdrawal from the final.
Eyeing the World Championships and LA Olympics
Zareen is now set to compete in her preferred 51kg category at the inaugural World Boxing Championships, organized by the newly formed international governing body, World Boxing. Her focus remains steadfast on medalling at this event, which serves as a crucial step in her long-term vision.
The ultimate prize remains the Olympic medal, a dream she holds dear, especially with the LA Olympics less than three years away. “My ultimate dream is to win an Olympic medal. I’m not gonna give up so easily,” she confidently stated to Sportstar, underscoring her unwavering commitment to achieving the pinnacle of her sport.
