Nakło nad Notecią, Poland – Indian multi-event athlete Tejaswin Shankar continued his impressive trajectory by breaking his own decathlon National Record at the Wieslaw Czapiewski Memorial, a World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting in Poland. Shankar finished the challenging two-day competition in fourth place, accumulating a new personal best and national mark of 7826 points.
Surpassing His Previous Best
This new record eclipses Shankar’s previous National Record of 7666 points, which he set during his silver medal-winning performance at the 2023 Asian Games. The 26-year-old’s consistent efforts across the ten disciplines in Poland showcased his improvement and determination in the demanding event.
While breaking the national record is a significant achievement, Shankar’s tally of 7826 points still falls short of the stringent qualifying standard of 8550 points required for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Nevertheless, his performance demonstrates continued progress as he aims for major international competitions.
A Strong Showing Across Disciplines
Shankar had started Day 1 of the competition in commanding fashion, leading the standings after strong performances in the 100m (a personal best), long jump (season best), and high jump (leading overall). While specific event-by-event details for Day 2 were not detailed, his overall score reflects a commendable outing against a competitive international field.
Tejaswin Shankar’s relentless pursuit of excellence in decathlon continues to inspire, as he pushes the boundaries of Indian athletics while eyeing future global championships.
