Abeokuta, Nigeria – South Africa has once again asserted its continental supremacy in athletics, successfully retaining its crown as African champions at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Under-18 and Under-20 Championships, which concluded in Abeokuta, Nigeria, on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
Team SA’s Triumphant Return Home
The victorious Team SA is now in the process of returning home in two groups. The first contingent departed Lagos on Monday for Kigali, Rwanda, before landing at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Tuesday, July 22. The second group embarked on their journey from Nigeria this afternoon (Wednesday), also en route to Kigali, and is expected to touch down in Johannesburg later today.
Results Glitches Cloud Official Announcement
While South Africa’s on-field dominance is clear, the exact final medal count and comprehensive results from the championships remain unconfirmed. The organizers, including the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the official timing company, Timetronics, reportedly experienced significant technical difficulties throughout the event. Multiple crashes of their electronic system led to a chain of chaos, resulting in inconsistent preliminary results.
Consequently, the final, official statistics of the championships will first be declared by the CAA. This official announcement will precede any public release of the full results, ensuring accuracy and consistency after the technical issues are fully resolved. Despite these challenges, South Africa’s overall performance has secured their position as the leading nation in African youth athletics.
