East Bengal Kicks Off Durand Cup 2025 Against South United FC: Team News, Facts, and  Details

Kolkata : The 134th edition of the Durand Cup commenced today in Kolkata with a much-anticipated clash between Kolkata giants East Bengal FC and tournament debutants South United FC. The match was scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM IST at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium), following an opening ceremony at 4:30 PM IST.

Team Preparations and Background:

East Bengal entered the campaign aiming to reclaim their legacy, having won the Durand Cup a record 16 times. Led by new head coach Oscar Bruzon and bolstered by summer signings including Bipin Singh, Edmund Lalrindika, Martand Raina, Ramsanga, and international recruits Mohammed Rashid, Miguel Figueira, and Kevin Sibille, the team signaled intent for a strong start after a difficult end to their previous season. Notably, East Bengal failed to win any of their last five competitive games, finishing ninth in the 2023-24 Indian Super League with just six wins from 24 matches. Their last victory came in February over Hyderabad FC.

South United FC, based in Bengaluru and founded in 2012, was making its maiden appearance in India’s oldest football tournament. The club currently competes in the BFDA Super Division, and today’s match marked their first-ever encounter with East Bengal.

Coach’s Perspective:

Head Coach Oscar Bruzon of East Bengal commented, “This is the beginning of the season. We are trying to enhance the fitness levels of all the players… The Durand Cup is a very tough competition because only one team from each group can progress to the knockouts. South United will be a tough opponent because they have been preparing for quite some time now.”

Live Telecast and Streaming:

TV Broadcast: Sony Sports Network

Live Streaming: Sony LIV app and website

Tournament Format:

Both clubs are placed in Group A with Namdhari FC and Indian Air Force FT. Only one team from each group advances to the knockout stages, lending every match crucial significance.

The opening fixture of Durand Cup 2025 set the stage for East Bengal to reassert their dominance and for South United to showcase their ambition on the national stage. With enhanced squads, high stakes, and passionate supporters, this match signals an exciting tournament ahead.
