Punjab : The Indian Open Athletics Meet held at the War Heroes Stadium in Sangrur, Punjab, is breaking new ground by extending from one day to two days on July 27 and 28, 2025, due to an unprecedented participation of nearly 900 athletes. This large turnout makes it the biggest domestic athletics event in recent years.
Introduced by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the Indian Open series aims to boost competitive opportunities across eight meets nationwide this season. The Sangrur event is the second series meet this year, following a smaller April meet with approximately 130 athletes.
Athletes are using this platform to qualify for major national championships such as the upcoming National Inter-State Senior Championships in Chennai. The AFI requires athletes to meet qualifying standards by competing in these Indian Opens, Grand Prix meets, or state championships between May and August.
The extension of the event means all athletes and officials have been advised to plan their travel and stay accordingly. This milestone highlights the growing enthusiasm and development of athletics across India, showcasing rising talents alongside seasoned competitors.
