Bhubaneswar :
In a dramatic twist to recent retirement chatter, the BCCI has confirmed that Indian cricket’s two biggest superstars — Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli — are not walking away from ODIs anytime soon. Despite their recent retirements from T20Is and Test cricket, both veterans remain committed to the 50-over format and are open to playing in the 2027 ICC World Cup.
Speaking to media, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla delivered the big update:
“They are not retiring from ODIs. They are very much available. And let me clarify — the BCCI doesn’t pressure anyone to retire. That’s always a personal call.”

Still Chasing Glory in Blue
This announcement comes weeks after Rohit and Kohli announced their exit from T20Is following India’s triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and just days after stepping away from the Test format. Many believed the legends were ready to bid farewell to international cricket altogether.
However, the new statement has reignited excitement among fans — as both players are expected to be central figures in India’s campaign for the 2027 World Cup, jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Veterans Still Valuable
With nearly two decades of experience between them, Rohit and Kohli bring more than just stats to the table — they carry composure under pressure, leadership in crunch moments, and a proven ability to deliver on the world stage.
The BCCI’s decision to keep the doors open reflects a belief that their experience can still serve India well during a crucial transition phase with younger players entering the fold.
A Tactical Shift, Not a Farewell
Rohit and Kohli’s gradual exit from other formats appears to be part of a calculated shift to preserve peak performance in ODIs. Both players are known for their hunger for ICC silverware, and 2027 could be their final shot at one more World Cup.
Their next appearance could come during India’s high-stakes ODI tour of Australia later this year — a series that will likely test both form and fitness as the team begins shaping its World Cup core.
A Final Chapter Still to Be Written
While younger talents like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are making strong cases, India’s most trusted run-machines aren’t quite ready to pass the torch. For millions of fans, that means more breathtaking cover drives from Kohli and more towering sixes from Rohit — at least for a little longer.
One thing is certain: the final chapter of their legendary careers will be written in the 50-over arena — and the story is far from over.
