The Indian team for the Under-17 World Championship has been selected. The selection trials for the national team were conducted on Monday (July 7). Interestingly, the team has six medal winners from the recently-held Asian Championships.
This year, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had restricted the trials to medal winners at the recent U17 National Championship. Therefore, only the best wrestlers in each of the 10 categories competed in the selection trials.
Which Asian Championship medallists were selected? Haryana’s Rachna Parmar (43kg), Delhi’s Moni (57kg), Rajasthan’s Ashvini Vaishno (65kg), and Haryana’s Manisha (69kg), who won gold medals at the Asian Championships in Vietnam, made it to the national team.
Who others were selected? Uttar Pradesh’s Preeti (40kg), Kasish (46kg), Komal (49kg), Yashita (61 kg), and Kajal (73kg) were the other trial winners.
Missed out for expired passport: Anshika Yadav from UP missed out on competing in 69kg category. The officials stopped her from taking the trials as her passport is expiring in December this year. A six-month validity is a must for visa application. Officials said even if she would have won the trials, she wouldn’t have been allowed to travel for the championship.
