The second day of Wimbledon 2025 brought contrasting fortunes for top seeds as the tournament unfolded under a fierce summer sun.World No. 1 Jannik Sinner advanced comfortably, while women’s third seed Jessica Pegula suffered a shock first-round defeat, marking the biggest upset so far.
Sinner’s Confident Start
Jannik Sinner began his campaign with a composed performance, beating fellow Italian Luca Nardi in straight sets, 6–4, 6–3, 6–0. Sinner took control after a tight opening set, using clean groundstrokes and aggressive returns to close the match in just under two hours. He will face Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic in the second round.
Pegula’s Early Exit
Jessica Pegula, the tournament’s third seed, crashed out in straight sets to Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, ranked No. 116 in the world. Pegula struggled from the start, managing only five winners against 24 unforced errors. The match lasted less than an hour, ending 6–2, 6–3.It was Pegula’s first opening-round loss at a Grand Slam in five years and a major disappointment after her recent grass-court title in Germany. Cocciaretto celebrated the biggest win of her career, her first over a Top 5 player.
Heat Takes Its Toll
Temperatures soared above 32 °C (90 °F), creating difficult playing conditions. Players resorted to ice towels and frequent breaks to manage the heat. Several matches saw players visibly struggling with stamina.
Lorenzo Musetti became another high seed to fall, losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in four sets.Tommy Paul and Alex de Minaur progressed comfortably to the next round.Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova dropped her first set to Alexandra Eala but recovered to advance.Among British players, Katie Boulter upset Paula Badosa, while Heather Watson lost in three sets to Clara Tauson. As the tournament continues, the combination of intense heat and early upsets has already added drama to this year’s Championships. Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, and other top contenders will be tested not just by opponents, but by the demanding conditions on court.
