Kolkata Derby Returns: East Bengal, Mohun Bagan Set for Fiery Clash in CFL 2025

The grand old saga of Indian football is ready to unfold again as the Calcutta Football League (CFL) kicks off its 127th edition on June 25, 2025. With 26 teams drawn into two groups, the tournament promises weeks of thrilling action. But even among all the match-ups and subplots, one fixture stands head and shoulders above the rest: the Kolkata Derby between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.

This year, the iconic clash is scheduled for July 19 at 3:00 PM, and the city of Kolkata is already bracing for the explosion of passion and pride that accompanies this historic encounter. The match will be more than just a game; it will be a reawakening of century-old emotions and club loyalties that run deep in the veins of Bengali football fans.

East Bengal, defending CFL champions after a dominant 2024 campaign, are looking to continue their resurgence. Last season, they went unbeaten, showing a defensive resilience and attacking flair that brought back memories of their golden era. Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, are keen to reassert their authority. Though they didn’t clinch the title last time, their performances were no less spectacular — highlighted by an 8-1 demolition of Railway FC that made headlines.

The 2025 season also brings renewed focus on local talent, thanks to the enforcement of the ‘Son of the Soil’ rule, which mandates a minimum of four Bengal-born players in every playing XI. This initiative has not only added a layer of cultural identity to each game but has also created new opportunities for young footballers to break into the spotlight.

But for most fans, all eyes are on that one July afternoon. The Derby is more than just a football match. It’s a city divided — hilsa fish versus prawns, red and gold versus green and maroon, noise versus noise. It’s where legends are born, where careers are defined, and where memories are made in the echo of every chant and clash.

Historically, East Bengal holds the edge in CFL Derby meetings, including the very first CFL encounter in 1925 when they edged past their rivals 1-0. A hundred years later, the rivalry has only grown stronger, fuelled by every goal, tackle, and trophy.

As the countdown begins, both teams are in full swing with their preparations. Coaches are working on tactics, players are pushing themselves in training, and fans are preparing their voices and flags. The Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, where the Derby is likely to be staged, will once again become a cauldron of emotion and energy.

In a league that prides itself on legacy, drama, and raw footballing spirit, the Kolkata Derby remains its most priceless jewel. July 19 isn’t just a date — it’s a destination. For football romantics and loyalists alike, the battle lines are drawn.
