Rayudu Endorses Iyer As Ideal Successor
As India looks ahead to life beyond Rohit Sharma in One-Day Internationals, former middle-order stalwart Ambati Rayudu has backed Shreyas Iyer as the best candidate to take over the captaincy. Rayudu praised Iyer’s calm temperament and tactical awareness, pointing to his impressive leadership stints in the Indian Premier League. Under Iyer’s guidance, the Kolkata Knight Riders clinched an IPL title and Punjab Kings punched above their weight by reaching the finals.
Gill Seen As Long-Term Prospect Across Formats
While Shubman Gill remains one of India’s brightest young stars and already leads the Test side, Rayudu believes the ODI captaincy requires an experienced campaigner with proven credentials in handling high-pressure moments. Gill currently serves as vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is and is widely tipped as a future all-format leader. However, Rayudu argued that Iyer’s recent captaincy success makes him better positioned to step in immediately for the 50-over format.
India At A Transition Point
The debate over India’s next ODI skipper reflects the broader transition underway in Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma, who guided India to consistent dominance in white-ball cricket, is nearing the final stages of his ODI career. The choice between Iyer’s composed leadership and Gill’s long-term promise will be critical in shaping the direction of Indian cricket in the next cycle.
