Darwin :  Australia overcame a shaky start to defeat South Africa by 17 runs in the first Twenty20 international at TIO Stadium, thanks to a scintillating knock from Tim David and incisive bowling from Josh Hazlewood.

Australia Recover From Collapse

Sent into bat, Australia looked in deep trouble at 75 for 6 after a fiery new-ball spell from South Africa’s seamers. However, Tim David produced one of his finest international innings, smashing 83 from 52 deliveries, including seven boundaries and five towering sixes. His calculated aggression, supported by Nathan Ellis’s late cameo, propelled Australia to 178 for 9.

Hazlewood Turns The Tide

In reply, South Africa began steadily but Hazlewood’s disciplined bowling ripped through the middle order. The right-armer finished with 3 for 22, removing key batters at crucial stages and ensuring the hosts maintained control.

South Africa’s Fightback Falls Short

Ryan Rickelton anchored South Africa’s innings with a composed 71, and a quick burst from Tristan Stubbs kept the visitors in the hunt. Yet the chase faltered under pressure, with Maxwell’s stunning boundary catch and tight death overs from Adam Zampa sealing the result. South Africa were eventually dismissed for 161.

Series Momentum With Australia

The victory gives Australia a 1–0 lead in the three-match series, with the second T20 scheduled for Wednesday. David’s all-round composure and Hazlewood’s precision were the decisive factors, setting the tone for the remainder of the tour.
