India Legends Boycott Pakistan Clash In WCL 2025 Semi-Final Political tensions spill over into cricket as India Champions withdraw from marquee match-up

Bhubaneswar: In a significant and politically charged development, the India Champions have officially boycotted their semi-final match against the Pakistan Champions in the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025. The decision follows rising anti-Pakistan sentiment in India after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir.

Led by former stars Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, and Shikhar Dhawan, the India Champions chose not to take the field against their arch-rivals, leading to the cancellation of the match and Pakistan’s automatic qualification for the final.

Nation First, Sport Later: Sponsors Take a Stand

The boycott was further amplified by the actions of major sponsor EaseMyTrip. Co-founder Nishant Pitti publicly withdrew sponsorship of the India-Pakistan fixture, stating:

“Terror and cricket cannot go hand in hand. We stand with the nation. Some things are bigger than sport.”

The statement resonated with many across India, especially in the wake of heightened security concerns and strong public sentiment against bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan.

Tournament Impact and Reactions

With the India vs Pakistan semi-final now officially cancelled, Pakistan Champions have advanced to the final by default. They will face the winner of the second semi-final between South Africa Champions and Australia Champions.

This is the second time India has refused to face Pakistan in this tournament, having previously opted out of the group-stage clash as well. On both occasions, the World Championship of Legends organisers awarded points to both sides, but the latest walkout has drawn sharp reactions from cricketing circles.

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt criticized the boycott, questioning whether such precedents could eventually affect India’s participation in events like the ICC World Cup or the Olympics.

“This isn’t a local league or a private match. This is a global tournament. If this continues, we’ll soon see international events being disrupted,” Butt said in a televised interview.

The Line Between Sport and Politics

Cricket, often described as a religion in India, has long been intertwined with national pride and politics. While many fans and former players support the boycott on patriotic grounds, others have voiced concern over the increasing politicization of sports.

The WCL organizers have yet to clarify whether any disciplinary or logistical repercussions will follow the India Champions’ withdrawal. As the tournament now moves into its final stage without its most anticipated fixture, questions remain about the integrity and competitive balance of the event.

What’s Next?

The final of WCL 2025 is expected to take place later this week. Pakistan Champions, now finalists by default, await the outcome of the South Africa vs Australia semi-final.

Meanwhile, the India Champions’ exit has left fans divided—between admiration for the team’s patriotic stance and disappointment at losing what could have been another high-octane cricketing spectacle.
