Jay Meena Asian Games 2026 Journey Ends in History

The Jay Meena Asian Games 2026 story is about far more than a bronze medal. The 25-year-old from Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, became the first Indian to win an Asian Games medal in soft tennis, but his journey to the podium was filled with illness, injury and uncertainty. Weeks before the Games, Meena was bedridden with typhoid and a severe infection, lost eight kilograms and spent around 15 days away from competition. His parents even had to feed him by hand for nearly a week.

Meena had been preparing at the Asian Games training camp in Srinagar when illness forced him to return home in August. Even after leaving his bed, recovery was slow. For about a week, he felt dizzy after walking only a few steps, while stomach problems made rebuilding his strength difficult.

But with the Games approaching, Meena began light warm-ups and gradually returned to training. “I could not sit at home at such a moment,” he told Times of India. He recovered in time to travel to Tokyo and then Nagoya for his third Asian Games appearance.

The recovery also created a nutritional challenge in Japan. With limited vegetarian options available, Meena relied on foods including corn, bread, butter, milk and cereal while trying to regain the strength lost during his illness.

The competition itself brought another test. India’s men’s team, which included Meena, lost 0-2 to Indonesia in the quarterfinals. Meena and Aadhya Tiwari then exited in the first round of mixed doubles. Those defeats brought fresh doubts, especially after the physical problems he had already endured.

Meena eventually found his answer in the singles competition. He defeated the Philippines’ Sherwin Nuguit 4-3 in a dramatic quarterfinal. The match finished 0-4, 4-2, 2-4, 5-3, 2-4, 7-5, securing India’s first-ever Asian Games soft tennis medal.

Jay Meena Asian Games 2026 Semifinal Brings Another Challenge

Japan’s Takuya Kurosaka ended Meena’s run in the semifinal, winning 4-2. The scoreline was 5-3, 4-1, 4-1, 1-4, 4-6, 4-1. During the match, Meena needed a medical timeout and later revealed that a hip problem was making his backhand painful, describing the sensation as a “pinching” pain.

Despite the defeat, the semifinal berth guaranteed bronze and gave India its maiden Asian Games medal in soft tennis. Meena celebrated by collapsing onto the baseline before getting back up and roaring towards the Indian bench.

Jay Meena Asian Games 2026 Medal Has a Bigger Meaning

Meena’s breakthrough did not happen overnight. He had previously won National Games gold, India’s first World Championships medal in mixed doubles and an Asian Championships bronze. His journey began almost accidentally after his father encouraged him to join a sports academy following disciplinary problems at school.

His family also made sacrifices to keep his career alive. Meena revealed that financial difficulties meant his younger brother Yash, himself a national-level soft tennis medallist, eventually chose engineering so that the family could continue supporting Jay’s sporting career.

For Meena, the historic medal carries enormous weight. “For me, this is an Olympic medal,” he said, explaining that the Asian Games bring together the strongest soft-tennis nations even though the sport is not part of the Olympics.

From a bedridden athlete battling typhoid to India’s first Asian Games soft tennis medallist, Jay Meena’s comeback in 2026 became a story of resilience, belief and a historic breakthrough..
