Sathish Karunakaran Leads India to Historic First Badminton Medal at FISU World University Games

Bhubaneswar : India’s mixed badminton team, commanded by the standout performance of Sathish Kumar Karunakaran, etched history on July 20, 2025, by securing its first-ever medal in badminton at the FISU World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. This bronze medal marks a watershed moment for Indian university badminton, as the sport has been part of the Games since 2007.

India’s landmark medal was clinched after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Malaysia in the quarterfinals. Both losing semifinalists were awarded the bronze; hence, India’s mixed team entered the history books. The team’s journey ended in the semifinals with a hard-fought 3-1 loss to Chinese Taipei, where Karunakaran, opening in the men’s singles, lost a close battle to Su Li Yang (scores: 15-13, 13-15, 15-10).Devika Sihag equalised in the women’s singles but India couldn’t overturn losses in the subsequent doubles matches.

Key Performances:

In the quarterfinals, Karunakaran teamed up with Vaishnavi Khadekar for a decisive mixed doubles win (15-9, 11-15, 15-11).

Devika Sihag’s win in the women’s singles was crucial (15-8, 8-15, 15-12).

Tasnim Mir and Varshini Viswanath Sri clinched the deciding women’s doubles match, coming from a set behind to win 9-15, 15-13, 15-13.

Athlete’s Reflection:

Karunakaran described the bronze as “bittersweet,” proud of the milestone but motivated to aim for greater achievements. He credited associations, foundations, and his family for their support, noting the challenges Indian players face in reaching the international stage.

Looking Ahead:

Karunakaran immediately set his focus on the Macau Open Badminton Championships, targeting continued international success. Expressing a heartfelt desire to support the next generation, he aspires to one day establish a foundation to help future athletes overcome the difficulties he faced.
