Durand Cup 2025 to Feature 24 Teams: Tournament Set to Kick Off on July 23

Kolkata : The 2025 edition of the Durand Cup, India’s oldest and most prestigious football tournament, will feature 24 teams battling for glory when the competition kicks off on July 23. The announcement sets the stage for a month-long festival of football that promises to blend tradition with modern rivalry.

Six ISL Giants Among the Contenders

This year’s field will once again see the participation of six Indian Super League (ISL) clubs, bringing high-profile stars and fierce competition to the storied tournament. Heavyweights such as Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal will look to add to their rich Durand Cup legacies, while newer ISL entrants will aim to leave their mark.

Defending champions, Goa, will also return, eager to retain the title they clinched in a dramatic final last season.

New Entrants Bring International Flavor

The Durand Cup has gained a reputation in recent years for inviting foreign military teams and clubs from neighboring countries, adding a unique international dimension. This time too, organizers are expected to announce a few special entries, possibly including army teams from Asia and club sides looking for pre-season action.

Last year’s participation of the Bangladesh Army and the Indonesian Army team drew widespread attention and energized the group stage. Fans can expect similar intrigue when the full fixture list is revealed.

Historic Prestige Meets Modern Ambition

Founded in 1888, the Durand Cup has outlasted empires, survived wars, and evolved alongside Indian football. While its roots lie in colonial military sport, today it serves as a launchpad for emerging talents and a proving ground for established pros ahead of the ISL season.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Indian Army, joint organizers of the competition, have repeatedly emphasized their commitment to preserving the tournament’s heritage while keeping it relevant to a new generation of fans.

Packed Calendar and Multiple Venues

This year’s matches will be played across multiple cities, including Kolkata, Guwahati, and Kokrajhar, ensuring that supporters across the country have a chance to witness live action. The group stage will be followed by knockout rounds culminating in a grand final in late August.

Tournament officials have promised improved broadcast coverage and fan engagement, building on last year’s successful run that drew record viewership numbers.

Countdown Begins

With the participating clubs now confirmed, preparations are gathering pace. Clubs are finalizing squads, supporters are marking calendars, and anticipation is rising for a tournament that has defined Indian football for generations.

As the Durand Cup approaches its 137th year, it remains as relevant—and as fiercely contested—as ever.
