Ghim Takes Early Lead at John Deere Classic with Stellar 62

Doug Ghim, a 29-year-old Illinois native, has seized the first-round lead at the John Deere Classic, carding an impressive 9-under-par 62. Ghim’s bogey-free round was highlighted by an eagle from the sixth fairway and a strong finish with four of his seven birdies coming on the back nine at TPC Deere Run. He’s now looking to become the tenth first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season.

Key Performances and Standouts

  • Doug Ghim’s Dominance: Ghim’s round was a masterclass in consistency, featuring a crucial eagle and a flurry of birdies on the inward nine to establish a one-shot lead.
  • Homa’s Resurgence: Max Homa had his best round of 2025, carding a 63 after struggling for much of the season. His only stumble was a bogey on his final hole, the par-4 ninth, preventing him from matching Ghim’s 62.
  • Eckroat’s Explosive Start: Austin Eckroat made an immediate impact with two eagles in his first five holes. He sank an 11-foot putt on the par-5 second and then incredibly holed out from 137 yards on the fifth.
  • The Chasing Pack: Four players finished the day at 7-under 64: David Lipsky, Sam Stevens, Justin Lower, and former John Deere champion Michael Kim.
  • Fowler’s Strong Finish: Rickie Fowler posted a solid 6-under 65, fueled by an exceptional 29 on his second nine (the front nine).

Analysis: A Hot Start in Silvis

The opening round of the John Deere Classic saw several players go low, setting up an exciting tournament. Ghim’s performance was particularly notable for its flawless execution and clutch putting on the back nine. Max Homa’s strong showing suggests he might be finding his form after a challenging start to the season, while Austin Eckroat’s back-to-back eagles provided some early fireworks. The leaderboard is tightly packed, promising a competitive battle as the tournament progresses.
