The much-anticipated 2nd edition of the Naharlagun Premier League (NPL) commenced with vibrant fanfare on Wednesday, drawing football lovers from across the region. Organized at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, the tournament promises weeks of competitive action and an opportunity for young footballers to showcase their skills on a prominent stage.The opening ceremony set an energetic tone for the event, with local cultural performances and a parade of participating teams. Dignitaries including local MLAs, sports officials, and community leaders graced the occasion, emphasizing the role of sports in fostering unity and channeling youth energies towards positive pursuits.This year’s NPL features 16 teams, each representing clubs and communities from Naharlagun and nearby areas. The league follows a group-stage format leading to knockout rounds, with fixtures scheduled in the evenings to allow maximum public attendance. Organizers have placed particular focus on improving infrastructure compared to the inaugural season, including upgraded floodlights, better seating arrangements, and a digital scoreboard.Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Guest Taba Tedir, Minister for Education and Cultural Affairs, lauded the organizers and encouraged players to maintain sportsmanship and discipline throughout the tournament. “Football is more than a game; it builds friendships, strengthens communities, and inspires young minds,” he said.Early matches witnessed spirited performances, with defending champions Todo United FC starting strong with a comfortable win in their opening fixture. Spectators, many draped in their teams’ colors, cheered passionately, reflecting the league’s growing popularity and its potential to become a cornerstone sporting event in Arunachal Pradesh.Local businesses and sponsors have also come forward to support the league, providing financial backing and prizes. In addition to the coveted NPL Trophy, individual awards for best player, top scorer, and best goalkeeper will be presented at the finale.The 2nd Naharlagun Premier League is scheduled to run through the month, culminating in a grand final in late July. With increased participation, improved facilities, and an engaged community, this edition marks another promising step in strengthening grassroots football in the region.
