US Open 2025: Tanvi Stuns Second Seed, Srikanth Suffers Shock Exit

Council Bluffs, Iowa – June 26, 2025:

India’s campaign at the US Open 2025 badminton tournament kicked off with mixed emotions as young prodigy Tanvi Sharma produced the biggest upset of the day, while seasoned campaigner Kidambi Srikanth made a disappointing first-round exit.

Tanvi Sharma’s Breakthrough Moment

At just 16, Tanvi Sharma delivered a fearless performance against second seed Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam. Ranked 66th in the world, Tanvi displayed remarkable poise and composure to win in straight games, 21-19, 21-9, in just 35 minutes.

She was trailing 5-12 in the opening game but mounted a confident comeback with sharp net play and well-timed smashes. Once she edged out the first game, her confidence soared, and she completely dominated the second. It was not just a win but a statement—India’s next generation is ready to rise.

Srikanth’s Struggles Continue

In sharp contrast, former world number one Kidambi Srikanth faltered once again. Facing England’s lower-ranked Harry Huang, Srikanth started strong but could not maintain his rhythm, eventually losing 21-19, 12-21, 14-21.

Srikanth had been hoping to build on his recent finals appearance at the Malaysia Masters, but the inconsistencies that have plagued him over the past year resurfaced. Despite flashes of brilliance, he lacked the finishing power and court movement to close out the match.

Other Indian Results: Ups and Downs

It was a tough day for the Indian men’s singles players overall. Priyanshu Rajawat, seeded sixth, was beaten in three games by Yen Chen-Ting of Chinese Taipei. Sankar Subramanian and Rithvik Sanjeev also crashed out in straight games.

On the brighter side, Ayush Shetty, the fourth seed, kept his momentum going with a steady win over Denmark’s Magnus Johannesen, while Tharun Mannepalli fought hard to overcome France’s Arnaud Merkle in a tight three-game battle.

Women’s Singles: Quiet Progress

In addition to Tanvi’s spectacular performance, Anmol Kharb and Aakarshi Kashyap also advanced to the next round. Anmol showed grit by bouncing back from a game down, and Aakarshi looked confident in her straight-game victory.

Looking Ahead

Tanvi Sharma’s fearless attitude and intelligent court craft have instantly turned her into one of the most exciting prospects in the draw. Her upcoming matches will be closely watched by Indian fans eager to see a new star emerge. Meanwhile, players like Ayush Shetty and Aakarshi Kashyap have a real chance to make deeper runs in the tournament.

For Srikanth and others who bowed out early, it’s a moment of reflection and regrouping. But for Indian badminton as a whole, the emergence of young talent like Tanvi signals a promising future.
