Lalit Babu: The Grandmaster Who Still Burns Bright

In the world of Indian chess, Grandmaster M.R. Lalit Babu remains a name synonymous with resilience, consistency, and quiet determination. Now representing the Aurionpro Chess Team in the ongoing Global Chess League, the 31-year-old from Vijayawada has reminded fans and critics alike that he is far from done. “I still have the fire,” he says—and his recent performances back that claim.

Lalit Babu has long been a stalwart in the Indian chess circuit. A Grandmaster since 2012, he has carved a reputation for being a reliable board warrior, known for deep preparation, tactical sharpness, and unshakeable focus under pressure. Though India’s new generation of teenage prodigies often dominate the headlines, Lalit Babu is proving that experience and hunger remain invaluable assets in high-stakes competition.

At the 2024 National Chess Championship, Lalit finished joint-second, showing superb form and strategic maturity. That performance helped him earn a spot in the Aurionpro team for the prestigious Global Chess League, where he now finds himself competing against some of the top names in the game.

Despite being among the more seasoned players in the league, Lalit’s fighting spirit has stood out. “There’s a misconception that once you cross 30, you lose your edge,” he remarked in a recent conversation. “But I feel stronger, more focused, and more motivated than ever. I’m hungry to compete, to win.”

Lalit’s journey has never been flashy—but it has been one of persistence. Coming from a modest background in Andhra Pradesh, he steadily rose through the ranks with a mix of hard work and self-belief. He has represented India in multiple Chess Olympiads and has numerous domestic titles under his belt, including the Commonwealth Championship gold in 2017.

Now, with a corporate-backed team supporting him and renewed motivation, Lalit Babu is eyeing new heights. He speaks of training harder, adapting to the rapidly evolving game, and embracing the digital shift in chess preparation. “It’s a new era, yes, but my basics are strong. And I’ve never stopped learning.”

While the limelight often finds younger stars like Gukesh D or Praggnanandhaa, Lalit Babu’s continued excellence is a reminder that Indian chess thrives not only because of prodigies but also because of its experienced pillars. And as long as that fire burns within him, Lalit Babu will remain a name to watch—quietly, confidently, and relentlessly.
