SL V Ban, 1st Test: Bangladesh Take Charge with Record Stand on Day One

Bangladesh found themselves in trouble early on, slipping to 45-3 after electing to bat in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. However, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim combined to turn the tide with a record-breaking fourth-wicket partnership.

Historic Partnership
The pair added 247 runs, the highest fourth-wicket stand for Bangladesh in Tests against Sri Lanka, helping the visitors close day one at a strong 292-3. Their partnership was built on patience, smart shot selection, and resilience under pressure.

Mushfiqur’s Resurgence
Mushfiqur Rahim, the most capped Test player in Bangladesh’s history, responded to recent criticism with a composed and determined century. Coming into the match without a fifty in his last 13 innings, the 38-year-old brought his experience to the fore, scoring his 12th Test hundred. He had a brief scare on 25 when debutant Tharindu Rathnayake dropped a tough chance but went on to capitalise fully. The Galle venue has been special for Mushfiqur, who previously scored a double century there in 2013.

Shanto Leads from the Front
Captain Shanto played a fluent innings, staying positive throughout. He rotated the strike effectively and punished loose deliveries, bringing up his sixth Test century with a paddle sweep off Prabath Jayasuriya. It marked his first century since November 2023 and his second against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s Early Strikes
Sri Lanka had early success when pacer Asitha Fernando dismissed opener Anamul Haque for a duck. Offspinner Tharindu Rathnayake, playing his first Test, claimed two quick wickets and showed promise. However, once the Shanto-Mushfiqur partnership settled, Sri Lanka struggled to regain control.

Looking Ahead
With a strong foundation laid on day one, Bangladesh will aim to build further and put pressure on the hosts. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will look to regroup and find breakthroughs early on day two.
