Mumbai Indians have appointed former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their head coach for the Indian Premier League 2027 season. Pollard, who served as the franchise’s batting coach in recent seasons, takes over following the departure of Mahela Jayawardene.

The appointment marks another milestone in Pollard’s long association with the five-time IPL champions, who last lifted the trophy in 2020.

Pollard brings extensive MI experience

Mumbai Indians said Pollard’s elevation reflects the franchise’s commitment to strengthening its legacy, developing talent and maintaining a strong team culture.

The 39-year-old represented Mumbai Indians in the IPL from 2009 until his final appearance in the 2022 edition. He subsequently continued his association with the franchise as a coach.

Expressing his feelings about the new responsibility, Pollard said Mumbai Indians had played a significant role in his life and career. He also highlighted his strong connection with the players, supporters and the franchise’s identity.

Pollard said he understood the responsibility of representing the team’s blue and gold colours, having experienced the journey as both a player and a coach.

New coach aims to revive team’s fortunes

Mumbai Indians will look to regain their winning momentum under Pollard after a challenging run in recent IPL seasons. The franchise has alternated between playoff appearances and bottom-of-the-table finishes over the last five editions.

Reflecting on the team’s recent struggles, Pollard said his immediate priority would be to assess what needed to be done and bring the required energy and spirit into the setup.

He also indicated that he did not intend to make sweeping changes to the team’s approach, noting that the Mumbai Indians’ winning philosophy was already deeply ingrained in him.

Mumbai Indians target IPL 2027 success

Pollard said his competitive spirit and determination to win would remain unchanged in his new role, although he would now operate from the sidelines rather than the field.

Mumbai Indians will hope his familiarity with the franchise, its players and its culture helps the team mount a strong challenge for the IPL 2027 title and end its wait for another championship.
