India began their AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 qualifying campaign in impressive fashion, but the victory was anything but comfortable. The Blue Colts held their nerve under prolonged pressure before Shami Singamayum struck in the 86th minute to secure a 1-0 win over Syria at the Do’stlik Stadium in Tashkent on Monday.
The result gives Mahesh Gawali’s side an important three points at the start of a demanding Group B campaign and also created a piece of history: it was India’s first competitive victory over Syria at U19/U20 level.

Syria apply the pressure
India spent large periods of the match without the ball as Syria looked to take control in the attacking third. Alan Mamo was among the early threats, forcing goalkeeper Suraj Singh Aheibam into an important save.
Syria continued to test India from outside the box, while a dangerous set-piece shortly before half-time almost produced the opening goal. Belal Almooslee’s header narrowly missed the target.
The pattern continued after the break. Mahmoud Alhasan saw an effort denied by Suraj, while another Syrian opportunity came even closer when Ahmad Khalaf’s header crashed against the crossbar in the 73rd minute.
For India, the defensive work became the foundation of the performance.
Gawali’s substitutions change the game
With Syria continuing to create opportunities, Gawali made a bold triple change in the 79th minute, introducing Md Arbash, Prashan Jajo and Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam. Omang Dodum followed shortly afterwards.
The fresh legs finally gave India greater attacking momentum.
Seven minutes after entering the field, Arbash became central to the winning move. A loose ball inside the Syrian penalty area fell kindly after a defensive slip, and Arbash reacted quickly before cutting the ball back towards Shami.
Shami had continued his run into the box and found himself with valuable space. Rather than rush the opportunity, he calmly finished with his left foot to put India ahead in the 86th minute.
Five straight clean sheets
India’s victory was not simply about one late goal. Their defensive discipline stood out throughout the contest.
The shutout against Syria was India’s fifth consecutive clean sheet, following four successive clean sheets in their pre-qualifying friendly matches. That defensive consistency could prove particularly important in a qualification format where goal difference and narrow results may have a major impact.
Suraj Singh Aheibam also played a key role, particularly during Syria’s strongest spells. His saves ensured India remained in the contest long enough to produce their late winner.
A valuable start in a demanding group
India are competing in Group B alongside hosts Uzbekistan, Syria and Bangladesh. Under the AFC’s qualification format, the eight group winners and seven best runners-up will advance to the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027.
Uzbekistan also started with a victory, defeating Bangladesh 2-0 in the other Group B fixture. That makes India’s next match particularly significant, with the Blue Colts set to face the hosts on September 3 at 7:30 PM IST.
India may not have controlled the match against Syria, but they showed something equally valuable: the ability to stay organised under pressure, wait for their opportunity and make it count.
For a young team chasing Asian Cup qualification, that could be the kind of victory that shapes an entire campaign.
