Kajal Dhochak successfully defended her U20 World title by winning the 76kg gold at the U20 Wrestling World Championship here on Friday, while compatriots Tanu Sharma and Savita claimed silver medals.
The 18-year-old Kajal dominated China’s Jingru Sun 7-0 in the final to secure her second consecutive U20 World title, having won the 72kg crown last year.
Kajal has already made a strong transition towards senior-level wrestling. She won gold at the Ranking Series events in Mongolia and Budapest this year and also claimed the U20 Asian Championship title in Pattaya.
Tanu, Savita Fall Short
Tanu produced a determined performance in the 72kg final against Japan’s Chisato Yoshida but narrowly lost 3-5 to settle for silver.
Savita also finished runner-up in the 62kg category after Japan’s Sakura Onishi defeated her by technical superiority, winning 12-2.
India have another gold medal opportunity with Mansi Lather through to the 68kg final, where she will face China’s Chenling Song.
Komal will compete in the 59kg repechage against Spain’s Rosa Molina Rodriguez.
India’s Greco-Roman wrestlers finished without a medal, while the men’s freestyle competition will begin later on Friday and conclude on Sunday.
