With skateboarding set to feature at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Indian skateboarders have urged the Indian Olympic Association to ensure the country does not miss another opportunity to compete on the continental stage.

Indian skateboarding is making a fresh push for recognition ahead of the 2026 Asian Games, with athletes appealing to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) over their participation in the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

The issue is significant because skateboarding is already part of the Asian Games programme for 2026. The competition is scheduled to be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4, with skateboarding among the sports on the programme.

The main issue: a place on India’s Asian Games team

Indian skateboarders are seeking clarity and support from the country’s Olympic administration as the Asian Games approach.

For athletes who have spent years training in a sport that still operates on the fringes of India’s mainstream sporting system, the appeal is about more than simply entering a competition. It is also about getting access to a recognised pathway through which they can compete internationally and represent India.

Skateboarding has already established itself as a major international sport, including an Olympic discipline. Yet Indian athletes continue to face challenges related to institutional recognition, competitive opportunities, training infrastructure and financial support.

A recent report on India’s skateboarding scene highlighted how athletes have struggled with limited elite-level facilities and uncertain career pathways despite the sport’s growing international status.

Asian Games opportunity

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will provide skateboarders across Asia with another major continental platform.

The 2026 programme includes four skateboarding medal events, with the discipline scheduled to be held at the Aichi Sky Expo.

For India, participation would give its skateboarders an opportunity to test themselves against some of the continent’s strongest competitors and gain valuable experience at a major multi-sport event.

The absence of a clear pathway, however, could leave Indian athletes watching from outside while other Asian nations prepare their squads.

Why the appeal matters

The appeal to the IOA also brings a larger issue in Indian sport into focus: how emerging and less-established Olympic disciplines are supported.

Unlike cricket, badminton, wrestling or athletics, skateboarding does not yet have a comparable sporting ecosystem in India. Athletes often have to build their careers through personal effort, private facilities and limited competitive opportunities.

That makes institutional backing particularly important.

A Delhi-based skateboarding academy, for example, has trained hundreds of skateboarders while also pointing to the shortage of elite training spaces and limited financial security for athletes.

India needs to look beyond traditional sports

The demand from skateboarders comes at a time when international skateboarding is becoming increasingly structured.

Other Asian countries are already developing dedicated systems for their athletes. Singapore, for instance, has established a formal selection policy for skateboarding for the 2026 Asian Games, covering the street and park disciplines and setting out performance-based selection requirements.

Indonesia has also been preparing its skateboarders through a national training programme ahead of Aichi-Nagoya. Its squad began a long-term camp in Bali in February and has planned overseas training and international competitions as part of its preparation.

The contrast underlines the challenge facing India: talent alone may not be enough without a structured competitive and administrative pathway.

The numbers behind the story

Asian Games: Aichi-Nagoya 2026

Dates: September 19 to October 4, 2026

Skateboarding medal events: 4

Skateboarding venue: Aichi Sky Expo

Status: Skateboarding included in the 2026 Asian Games programme

Key issue for India: Institutional support and a clear route for athlete participation

What happens next?

The appeal now puts the spotlight on the IOA and the wider Indian sporting administration.

For India’s skateboarders, the Asian Games represent a chance to move from being an emerging sporting community to becoming recognised representatives of the country at one of Asia’s biggest sporting events.

The message from the athletes is therefore straightforward: if skateboarding is part of the Asian Games, India should have a pathway for its best skateboarders to compete.

The Aichi-Nagoya Games are approaching quickly. For Indian skateboarding, the next few weeks could determine whether its athletes get a place on the starting line — or are left waiting for another opportunity.
