India’s preparations for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, are entering a decisive phase, with the country’s leading track-and-field athletes set to sharpen their preparations in Japan ahead of the continental showpiece.

The Asian Games will be held from September 19 to October 4, with athletics expected to remain one of India’s strongest medal-producing disciplines. The move to train in Japan is aimed not only at improving performance but also at helping athletes adjust to the local conditions before competition begins.

Japan camp to add the final layer

With the Asian Games being staged on Japanese soil, an overseas preparation camp could prove particularly valuable. Athletes will have the opportunity to become familiar with the weather, environment and competition setting rather than arriving shortly before their events.

The timing is also important. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has structured the domestic calendar so that Asian Games-bound athletes get competitive opportunities close to the Games.

The final leg of the Indian Athletics Series is scheduled for September 10 in Delhi, nine days before the opening of the Asian Games. Entries for the event will be invitation-based, according to rankings, and Asian Games-bound athletes are expected to participate.

Bhubaneswar provided the selection battleground

The road to Japan has already passed through a major domestic test.

The 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar from June 24 to 28, served as the key selection event for the Asian Games. Athletes had to put together performances strong enough to meet the qualification requirements and convince the selectors.

The selection process has been deliberately performance-oriented, with the AFI establishing qualification standards and using the National Inter-State Championships as a central part of the pathway.

Neeraj Chopra remains a major medal hope

One of the biggest attractions of India’s athletics campaign will be Neeraj Chopra.

The two-time Olympic medallist has been confirmed for the Asian Games, where he will attempt to defend his javelin throw gold medal. Chopra’s 2026 season began later than usual after a lower-back injury, but he returned to competition at the Doha Diamond League and recorded 85.69m to finish fourth.

His presence gives India a proven championship performer in one of the country’s most closely followed events.

India’s athletics record raises expectations

Indian athletics enters the 2026 Asian Games with considerable momentum. At the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Indian track and field athletes won 29 medals, including six golds, making athletics one of the country’s most successful disciplines at the Games.

That performance has inevitably raised expectations for Aichi-Nagoya.

The challenge now is to convert domestic success and international experience into medals when the pressure is at its highest.

Key points

Asian Games: Aichi-Nagoya 2026

Games dates: September 19–October 4, 2026

Athletics preparation: Japan-based preparation planned ahead of the Games

The bigger picture

The Japan preparation camp is more than a logistical exercise. For India’s athletes, it represents the final opportunity to fine-tune technique, manage fatigue and build confidence before stepping onto the Asian Games stage.

With established stars, emerging performers and a strong recent record behind them, Indian athletics will arrive in Aichi-Nagoya carrying substantial expectations. The next few weeks will determine whether that preparation can translate into another memorable medal haul.
