The final night of swimming at the European Aquatics Championships Paris 2026 is set for a dramatic finish, with home favourite Léon Marchand preparing for another major challenge and Italy’s Simona Quadarella chasing a piece of European swimming history.

Marchand, who secured his first European title in Paris by winning the men’s 200m butterfly on Saturday, advanced to the 400m freestyle final on Sunday morning. The event is relatively new territory for the French superstar, making his qualification even more intriguing.

Marchand makes the final in a demanding field

Marchand finished second in his heat in 3:45.85, narrowly behind Belgium’s Lucas Henveaux, who clocked 3:45.78.

That placed Marchand fourth overall in the qualifying standings.

Germany’s Henrik Christiansen? No — the leading qualifier was Anastasi Klemet of Germany, who produced 3:45.22, followed by Hungary’s Oliver Pápai in 3:45.32. The field also contains one of the biggest names in distance freestyle: Germany’s Lukas Märtens, the reigning Olympic and world champion and world-record holder in the event.

Märtens only just made the final, qualifying eighth in 3:46.33, setting up a fascinating contest between established distance specialists and Marchand, whose greatest achievements have traditionally come in the individual medley and stroke events.

Marchand’s challenge is about more than another medal

The 24-year-old Frenchman is already one of the defining swimmers of his generation. His Paris 2024 Olympic campaign produced four gold medals, while his 200m butterfly victory on Saturday finally delivered his first senior European Championship title.

Now, the 400m freestyle offers a completely different test.

Unlike the individual medley, where Marchand can exploit his strength across four strokes, the freestyle requires him to sustain a high pace over eight lengths. His 3:45.85 in the heats shows that he is firmly in medal contention, but the presence of Märtens, Klemet, Pápai and Henveaux means there is little room for error.

Quadarella stands one victory from history

The women’s 400m freestyle carries an equally compelling storyline.

Italy’s Simona Quadarella qualified fourth fastest in 4:08.07, putting herself within striking distance of another European title.

The significance goes far beyond one race.

Quadarella has already won the 800m and 1500m freestyle titles in Paris. If she wins the 400m final, she will complete the three-event distance freestyle sweep for the third time in her European Championship career.

She previously achieved the 400m-800m-1500m triple at the 2018 and 2020 European Championships. In 2022, competing in Rome, she won the 800m and 1500m but had to settle for silver in the 400m.

A victory tonight would therefore give her an unprecedented third triple across those three distances.

Germany provides the biggest threat

Quadarella will not have an easy route to history.

Germany’s Maya Werner produced the fastest qualifying time of 4:05.40, while her compatriot Isabel Gose followed in 4:06.37. Portugal’s Francisca Soares was third fastest at 4:08.01, just ahead of Quadarella.

Gose is particularly interesting because of her strong recent record against Quadarella in middle-distance freestyle. Their rivalry has repeatedly produced tight races, adding another layer to an already high-stakes final.

Key numbers

Léon Marchand: 3:45.85 in the 400m freestyle heats

Marchand’s qualifying position: 4th

Lucas Henveaux: 3:45.78

Top men’s qualifier: 3:45.22

Lukas Märtens: 3:46.33, 8th qualifier

Simona Quadarella: 4:08.07

Quadarella’s qualifying position: 4th

Women’s top qualifier, Maya Werner: 4:05.40

Quadarella’s previous European distance triple: 2018 and 2020

A finale built for drama

The closing swimming session in Paris now has two very different stories converging on the same pool.

Marchand is chasing another medal in an event outside his traditional speciality, while Märtens and Europe’s established freestyle specialists will look to remind the Frenchman just how demanding the 400m can be.

For Quadarella, however, the stakes are even clearer. Eight minutes of racing could decide whether she becomes the first swimmer to complete the European 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle triple on three separate occasions.

The Paris crowd has already watched Marchand create another chapter in his growing legacy. The final session gives him one more opportunity to add to it — while Quadarella has history waiting at the other end of the pool.
