Sara Curtis Makes History: Italian Teenager Smashes 50m Backstroke World Record

The 19-year-old Italian clocked 26.63 seconds in the European Championships semi-final, breaking Kaylee McKeown’s four-year-old world record and announcing a new sprint star on the global stage.

Italian swimming has a new name at the very top of the record books. Sara Curtis produced a stunning world-record performance in the women’s 50m backstroke at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships in Paris, stopping the clock at 26.63 seconds in the semi-finals.

Curtis, only 19, delivered the performance when the pressure was at its highest. Instead of waiting for the final, the Italian attacked the semi-final from the opening strokes and produced a time that rewrote one of swimming’s fastest records.

Her swim also became the first world record of the 2026 European Championships, giving Italy one of the competition’s defining moments.

A Record That Fell by 0.23 Seconds

Curtis’ 26.63 was enough to knock Kaylee McKeown’s 26.86 world record off the books.

McKeown had established the previous benchmark at a World Cup meeting in Budapest on October 20, 2023. Curtis improved it by 0.23 seconds, a substantial margin in a race where hundredths of a second can determine the difference between a medal and missing the podium.

Record Book

New world record: Sara Curtis — 26.63s

Previous world record: Kaylee McKeown — 26.86s

Record improvement: 0.23s

Previous record set: October 20, 2023

Competition: European Aquatics Championships

Venue: Paris, France

Round: Women’s 50m backstroke semi-final

The result was even more impressive considering Curtis had only recently established herself as Europe’s fastest swimmer in the event.

From European Record to World Record

Curtis entered the European Championships in excellent form.

At the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome in June, she had already lowered the European record to 27.07 seconds, moving past Kira Toussaint’s previous continental mark. That performance made Curtis one of the swimmers to watch in Paris.

But in Paris, she went considerably faster.

The jump from 27.07 to 26.63 in such a short period underlines the scale of Curtis’ development. It was not simply another personal best; it was a performance that immediately changed the history of the event.

Curtis Was Already Making Her Mark in Paris

The world record was not an isolated achievement during the championships.

Curtis had already won bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle before producing her historic backstroke swim. She also helped Italy to silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay, giving her an impressive medal haul alongside the individual record.

Her performances show that Curtis is not merely a specialist backstroker. She is developing into one of Italy’s most versatile sprint swimmers.

Gaifutdinova Adds to a Remarkable Race

Russia’s Alina Gaifutdinova also produced an exceptional performance in the semi-final, finishing in 26.91 seconds.

That swim was significant in its own right. Gaifutdinova’s time ranks among the fastest performances ever recorded in the women’s 50m backstroke, but even that extraordinary effort could not keep pace with Curtis’ record-breaking swim.

The contrast between the two performances highlighted just how exceptional Curtis’ 26.63 was.

McKeown’s Era Gives Way to a New Generation

Curtis’ record also carries historical significance because of what it represents in relation to McKeown’s remarkable backstroke career.

When McKeown set the 50m world record in 2023, she became the first swimmer since World Aquatics began officially recognising the 50m backstroke world record in 1997 to simultaneously own the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke world records.

McKeown still holds the 200m backstroke world record, but her 100m mark was taken by American Regan Smith in 2024. Curtis’ breakthrough has now removed the Australian’s final sprint-distance backstroke world record.

A Teenager With a World Record

Curtis’ rise has been particularly rapid since she began combining her Italian career with studies in the United States at the University of Virginia.

At just 19, she now owns a world record in one of swimming’s most technically demanding sprint events. Her progression from a 27.07-second European record in Rome to 26.63 seconds in Paris is a clear indication of how quickly she has moved into the elite tier.

The Italian’s reaction after the race captured the scale of the moment. She had believed she was capable of reaching the world-record level, but did not expect it to happen in that particular semi-final.

That combination of confidence and surprise perhaps sums up Curtis’ breakthrough perfectly: the potential was already visible, but the scale of what happened in Paris was extraordinary.

Paris Produces More Swimming History

Curtis’ world record was not the only major headline from the championships.

Swedish superstar Sarah Sjöström won the women’s 50m butterfly in 25.05 seconds, matching Franziska van Almsick’s record of 18 European Championship titles. Britain’s Angharad Evans also won the women’s 100m breaststroke in a championship-record 1:04.87.

But Curtis’ performance stands apart as one of the most significant moments of the meet: a teenager breaking a world record that had stood for nearly three years.

The Main Takeaway

Sara Curtis did not simply win a semi-final in Paris. She changed the world record book.

Her 26.63-second swim demolished Kaylee McKeown’s previous 26.86-second benchmark and confirmed that Italy has produced a major new force in women’s sprint swimming.

With the European Championships still providing a platform for Curtis to showcase her ability, the question is no longer whether she belongs among the world’s best.

She has already arrived.
