India made a strong start at the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria, winning 17 medals, including four gold, four silver and nine bronze, on the opening day of the competition.
The championship began on Sunday and will continue until August 14, with Indian fencers dominating across the men’s and women’s individual events.
India secured at least one medal in all six individual events across Sabre, Foil and Epee, underlining the country’s strong showing across disciplines, the Fencing Association of India said in a release.
Nikhil Wagh Leads Men’s Gold Rush
Nikhil Wagh clinched gold in the men’s Sabre, while compatriot Lakshay Badser won silver. Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba completed an all-Indian podium sweep with bronze medals.
In men’s Foil, Tejas Patil secured silver and Hemash Sanasam won bronze.
Lokesh Vemani added another silver for India in men’s Epee, while Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess claimed bronze medals.
Women Fencers Continue Dominance
India’s women fencers also enjoyed a highly successful opening day, winning gold in two of the three disciplines.
Joys Ashita won the women’s Foil gold, with teammate Kanaglakshmi taking silver.
Prachi Lohan secured gold in women’s Epee, while Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya won bronze.
In women’s Sabre, Jeferlin claimed gold and Aakhari took silver, while Shreya Gupta added another bronze to India’s medal tally.
India Eye More Medals
The 17-medal haul gives India a strong platform for the remainder of the championship, which features competition through August 14.
Fencing Association of India Secretary General Rajeev Mehta congratulated the medal winners, coaches, support staff and families, praising their dedication behind India’s impressive opening-day performance.
With Indian fencers already reaching the podium in every individual event, the contingent will now look to build on its strong start and add to its medal tally in the remaining days of competition.
