For Nazareth Lalthazuala, the journey from Mizoram to the global mixed martial arts stage is gathering serious momentum.

The Indian fighter has already earned a US$100,000 contract with ONE Championship after an impressive run in the promotion’s Friday Fights series. Now, just a few months after securing that breakthrough deal, Lalthazuala is preparing for a much bigger challenge: his ONE Championship main-roster debut against American Gilbert Nakatani.

The strawweight MMA contest is scheduled for September 5, 2026, at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, at ONE Fight Night 47.

This is no longer simply about proving himself as a promising Indian fighter. Lalthazuala now has the opportunity to establish himself as a genuine contender on one of MMA’s biggest stages.

From Mizoram to ONE Championship

Lalthazuala, popularly known as “The Northstar,” has been perfect throughout his professional MMA career.

The 25-year-old from Mizoram has compiled an impressive 8-0 professional record, including three victories inside ONE Championship. His performances have been particularly notable for the speed with which he has been able to finish opponents.

His ONE journey began in spectacular fashion.

At ONE Friday Fights 135 in November 2025, Lalthazuala faced Japan’s Masaki Suzuki and needed only 17 seconds to secure a stoppage victory with punches.

He followed that up against Jake Bron in February 2026, finishing the contest by arm-triangle choke at 3:56 of the second round.

But his most important performance came at ONE Friday Fights 157.

Against Jhon Brutas, Lalthazuala produced another first-round TKO, a performance that ultimately earned him the coveted US$100,000 ONE Championship contract and his promotion to the organisation’s main roster.

The numbers behind Lalthazuala’s rise

Professional MMA record: 8-0

ONE Championship record: 3-0

ONE contract: US$100,000

Age: 25

Nickname: “The Northstar”

Team: Dojang MMA

Division: Strawweight

Nationality: Indian

Hometown: Mizoram

The numbers underline just how quickly Lalthazuala has progressed. He has not merely been winning; he has been finishing opponents and building an unbeaten record in the process.

Gilbert Nakatani presents a different challenge

The next opponent, however, brings a different level of experience and danger.

Gilbert Nakatani, a 32-year-old American from California, will welcome Lalthazuala to the ONE main roster. Nakatani trains at Aragon Training Academy and has recorded nine professional victories, with seven of those wins coming by stoppage.

His ONE Championship career has been mixed. After losing his first two contests in the promotion, Nakatani managed to return to winning ways with a first-round TKO.

However, his latest outing ended in disappointment.

At ONE Fight Night 42, Nakatani was stopped by Joshua Perreira in just 38 seconds of the opening round after a spinning backfist and follow-up punches.

That result makes the upcoming fight even more significant for the American. He will be looking to rebuild his momentum, while Lalthazuala will arrive with the confidence of an undefeated fighter making his biggest promotional appearance yet.

Why this fight matters

For Lalthazuala, this contest represents the transition from prospect to established ONE Championship fighter.

His $100,000 contract was an important reward for what he achieved at ONE Friday Fights, but the main roster brings a different level of pressure. A victory over Nakatani would give the Indian fighter an immediate statement win and strengthen his position in the strawweight division.

More importantly, it could bring him closer to the bigger fights he wants.

Lalthazuala has already spoken about his ambition to compete for the ONE World Championship. To reach that level, however, he must first demonstrate that his unbeaten run can survive against more established opposition.

Nakatani therefore represents more than another name on the schedule.

He is the first major test of whether “The Northstar” can carry his Friday Fights success into the highest level of ONE Championship competition.

India’s MMA spotlight turns to Mizoram

Lalthazuala’s rise is also significant beyond his individual career.

India has produced promising fighters across combat sports, but opportunities on a major global MMA platform remain valuable. Lalthazuala’s progress from Mizoram to a $100,000 ONE Championship contract offers another important storyline for Indian MMA.

His unbeaten record, aggressive finishing ability and rapid rise have already made him a fighter worth watching.

Now comes the harder part: doing it consistently against elite-level competition.

Fight Card Snapshot

Fight: Nazareth Lalthazuala vs Gilbert Nakatani

Promotion: ONE Championship

Event: ONE Fight Night 47

Division: Strawweight MMA

Date: September 5, 2026

Venue: Lumpinee Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand

Nazareth Lalthazuala: 8-0

ONE record: 3-0

Contract earned: US$100,000

Gilbert Nakatani: 9 career wins

Career stoppage wins: 7

The main story

Lalthazuala has already completed the first part of his mission: remain unbeaten, impress ONE Championship and earn his place on the main roster.

The next chapter is considerably more demanding.

A victory over Nakatani would confirm that his success was not simply a product of the Friday Fights circuit. It would establish Lalthazuala as a serious name in ONE’s strawweight division and potentially open the door to tougher opponents and bigger opportunities.

For a fighter who has travelled from Mizoram to the international stage, the $100,000 contract was a landmark.

But the contract is no longer the destination.

The main roster is where the real journey begins.
