Melissa Jefferson-Wooden continued her sensational sprinting season by edging training partner Sha’Carri Richardson in a dramatic women’s 100m final at the Prefontaine Classic, the ninth stop of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League in Eugene, Oregon.
In one of the closest races of the season, Jefferson-Wooden clocked 10.78 seconds to beat Richardson by just 0.01 seconds, with Richardson finishing in 10.79. Adaejah Hodge of the British Virgin Islands claimed third place in 10.80, making it a thrilling photo finish among the top three sprinters.
The victory further cements Jefferson-Wooden’s impressive form in 2026. The reigning world champion has been among the most consistent sprinters this season and once again proved her ability to deliver under pressure against one of the strongest fields in women’s sprinting.
Richardson, the reigning Olympic silver medallist and one of the sport’s biggest stars, pushed her training partner all the way to the finish but fell just short in a race decided by the narrowest of margins. Their rivalry has become one of the highlights of the current Diamond League campaign.
The women’s 100m was one of several standout events at Hayward Field. Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi stunned the men’s field by winning the 100m in 9.84 seconds, while teenage sensation Tate Taylor upset Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo in the men’s 200m. Nikki Hiltz also produced a memorable performance to win the women’s mile in a world-leading time, adding to an action-packed evening in Eugene.
With the World Athletics season entering a crucial phase, Jefferson-Wooden’s latest triumph strengthens her status as one of the favourites heading into the major championships later this year. Her victory over Richardson also adds another exciting chapter to one of track and field’s most compelling rivalries.
