PUNE, INDIA – In a determined bid to elevate India’s rowing performance at the upcoming Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, the national rowing squad has embarked on one of its most demanding preparation regimens yet at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) camp in Pune. Over recent weeks, athletes have been engaged in a structured programme of high-intensity on-water sessions, ergometer tests, strength conditioning and race simulation drills designed to build endurance and competitive sharpness for the continental stage.

Under the supervision of national coaches and sports science teams, India’s rowers are combining traditional rowing drills with modern conditioning — emphasising technical precision, aerobic capacity and seamless teamwork in sculling and sweep events. Training at the Army Rowing Node facility, which has been central to India’s rowing development, the squad is balancing volume with recovery protocols to peak at the Games later this year. At the same time, the women’s squad is undergoing a rigorous 51-day preparation camp at Gorakhpur’s Ramgarh Lake, focusing on technique across boat classes ahead of their international campaign.

While precise times and scores from the current camp are closely monitored by the selection panel, India’s recent performances signal a positive trajectory. At the 2025 Asian Rowing Championships, Indian crews secured a strong medal haul — including two golds and two silvers — demonstrating the squad’s competitive readiness against top Asian rowing nations.

The selection process for the Asiad team is framed around merit and performance. Results from the 2026 Senior National Rowing Championships and subsequent evaluations determine probables who enter these national camps; athletes must meet strict performance and fitness criteria to secure their entries on the final roster.

Indian rowing’s medal history also adds context to its preparations. In previous Games editions, crews have excelled in team events — highlighted by podium finishes such as the silver medal in the men’s eight event at Asian Games 2022, where the Indian crew clocked competitive times to finish just behind China.

With the Asian Games set from September 19 to October 4, 2026, these rigorous camps at Pune and Gorakhpur reflect India’s drive to convert intense preparation into podium success in Japan.
