World Gymnastics has officially lifted all restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes, marking a major turning point in international sport after more than four years of sanctions linked to the war in Ukraine.

The decision, announced following an executive committee meeting in Egypt, allows athletes from both countries to immediately return to international competitions under their national flags across all gymnastics disciplines. The move ends one of the most significant sporting suspensions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

For many athletes, the announcement brings emotional relief after years of uncertainty, isolation and competing under neutral status — or missing major events entirely.

The restrictions were originally introduced in March 2022 when Russian and Belarusian athletes were barred from international gymnastics events amid widespread sporting sanctions. Toward the end of 2024, gymnasts from both nations were gradually allowed back as neutral competitors, but national symbols, flags and official representation remained prohibited. (bbc.com)

Now, World Gymnastics has gone a step further by fully reinstating both countries.

The reversal applies across all five disciplines governed by the federation — artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, acrobatic gymnastics, aerobic gymnastics and trampolining. (bbc.com)

Russia’s return is particularly significant because of the nation’s enormous historical influence in gymnastics. For decades, Russian athletes have dominated Olympic and World Championship competitions, producing some of the sport’s most celebrated champions. At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Russian gymnasts won two gold medals and a total of 10 medals while competing under the Russian Olympic Committee banner due to separate anti-doping sanctions. Among the high-profile athletes expected to benefit from the decision is Angelina Melnikova, who helped Russia secure Olympic team gold in Tokyo and remains one of the sport’s most recognised stars. Her potential return under the Russian flag is likely to become one of the major talking points heading into upcoming international competitions.

The move also reflects a broader shift happening across global sports governance. Over recent months, several international federations have eased restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes. World Aquatics restored full participation rights earlier this year, while the International Judo Federation lifted its suspension in late 2025. The International Paralympic Committee had already allowed athletes from both nations to compete at the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan-Cortina. (insidegames.biz)

However, the decision is expected to spark debate within the international sporting community.

Critics argue that allowing Russia and Belarus to return under national flags risks weakening the symbolic stance global sport took following the Ukraine invasion. Supporters of reinstatement, meanwhile, believe athletes should not continue being punished for geopolitical conflicts beyond their control.

World Gymnastics has not publicly detailed whether additional eligibility conditions or monitoring systems will remain in place for returning athletes. But officials indicated the executive committee believed the circumstances now justified a full reversal of earlier sanctions. (bbc.com)

The decision could significantly reshape the competitive landscape ahead of future World Championships and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle. Russian gymnasts have traditionally been among the strongest medal contenders across multiple events, particularly in women’s artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics.

For athletes who spent years training away from international competition, the announcement offers an opportunity to finally return to the global stage without restrictions.

And for the gymnastics world itself, the decision marks the beginning of a new and potentially controversial chapter as sport continues navigating the complex intersection between politics, conflict and international competition.
