Unheralded talent Apeksha David produced a fine all-round performance to seize the spotlight on the opening day of the IGU Pune Ladies and Junior Girls Golf Championship at the Oxford Golf Resort.
The 17-year-old from Manipur carded a solid two-under 70, putting herself in pole position and opening up a two-shot lead over a strong field. Karnataka’s Priya Kumari and Yogya Bhalla were tied for second place after returning even-par 72s, while Ojaswini Saraswat, Janneya A Dasanniee, and Rehnoor Malik sat three shots off the lead on 73.
Starting from the 10th tee, Apeksha showed great character throughout her round. She picked up an early birdie with a 25-foot putt on the 12th but faced some challenges on the greens, three-putting for bogey on the 13th and dropping another shot on the 18th to turn at one-over.
She bounced back strongly on the back nine, sinking birdies on the 4th and 5th holes with confident putting, before sealing her round with a 10-footer on the final hole for a 70.
In Category ‘C’ (11-12 years), Aaliyah Kalra and Ridhima Kapoor were tied at the top with scores of 79.
