A major derby between Club Olimpia and Cerro Porteño was abandoned after violent clashes broke out between fans and police in Asunción.
Chaos unfolds in the stands
Trouble began during the Superclasico at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium when firecrackers were reportedly set off in the section allocated to Cerro Porteño supporters.
The situation quickly escalated, forcing police to fire rubber bullets and tear gas into the crowd. Hundreds of spectators spilled onto the pitch as authorities attempted to restore order.
Injuries and arrests reported
Around 100 people were detained following the unrest. While the number of injured fans remains unclear, at least six police officers were hurt, with one reported to be in serious condition.
Medical officials confirmed officers suffered head injuries, cuts and possible stab wounds during the clashes.
Blame game between clubs
Both clubs have pointed fingers following the incident. Olimpia’s leadership is pushing for a points decision in their favour, while Cerro Porteño officials argue that the responsibility lies with the hosts for failing to ensure proper security.
The match carried significant importance in the Paraguayan Primera División title race, with just six points separating the two sides.
League decision awaited
According to league rules, the team whose supporters are found responsible could forfeit the match. The final decision now rests with the disciplinary authorities as investigations continue into one of the most serious incidents in recent Paraguayan football.
