Carrick Leaves Door Ajar for Rashford’s Manchester United Return

With Barcelona’s £26m buy-option in limbo and no decision yet on his future, Marcus Rashford could once again be in line for a comeback at Old Trafford this summer.

Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick has made it clear that the future of forward Marcus Rashford remains unresolved as the 2025-26 season nears its conclusion, and he stopped short of ruling out a return to his boyhood club. With Rashford currently on loan at Barcelona, where his permanent transfer clause of approximately €30 million (£26 million) has yet to be activated by the Spanish side, the England international’s next destination remains uncertain ahead of the summer transfer window and the build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Rashford, 28, has enjoyed a solid campaign at Barcelona, registering 12 goals and 13 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions in La Liga and other tournaments, though he hasn’t cemented a regular starting spot. Barcelona hold the option to make his stay permanent but are reportedly hesitant about triggering the agreed fee.

At a press conference ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Chelsea, Carrick was carefully diplomatic when asked about Rashford’s prospects at Old Trafford. He said that there were decisions to be made “in time” and that while nothing had been decided yet regarding Rashford, discussions will follow. Carrick also emphasised his commitment to working with whoever is at the club next season.

Rashford, who has not featured for United since December 2024 and spent part of the 2024-25 season on loan at Aston Villa, remains under contract with United until 2028. His wages — reportedly around £315,000-£325,000 per week — could be subject to a significant increase if United qualify for the UEFA Champions League, adding a financial dimension to his future plans.

From United’s perspective, the clause must be honoured if Barcelona want to retain him, and club officials have made it clear they are not open to renegotiating the fee. Should Barcelona decline to make the move permanent by the June 15 deadline, Rashford would return to Old Trafford with the possibility of a new chapter, whether under Carrick or a successor as manager.

Rashford’s potential return comes at a time when United are pushing for a strong finish in the Premier League and eyeing Champions League qualification, while also preparing for a busy summer of transfers and squad restructuring.

Key Stats & Facts:

Marcus Rashford (28): 12 goals and 13 assists in 43 games for Barcelona this season.

Barcelona’s buy option: €30 million (~£26.1m), deadline mid-June.

Contract expiry: Rashford tied to United until 2028.

Wage conditions: Potential rise to ~£325,000/week if United reach Champions League.

In short, Rashford’s story is far from over: should Barcelona balk at the fee, Manchester United could be preparing for a familiar — if complex — reunion.
