Hugo Ekitike will miss the remainder of the season and the upcoming World Cup after suffering a serious Achilles tendon rupture during Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

The Liverpool striker was forced off on a stretcher in the first half at Anfield after slipping during the match. The Hugo Ekitike Achilles injury has now been confirmed through scans, ruling him out for the rest of the club campaign and ensuring a Hugo Ekitike World Cup 2026 absence for France national football team.

Hugo Ekitike Liverpool Injury Update

Liverpool confirmed the severity of the injury in an official statement after medical scans were conducted.

“Scans on the issue have subsequently confirmed a rupture of the Achilles tendon,” the club said.

The Hugo Ekitike Liverpool injury update means the forward will miss the remaining weeks of the season. The club has not yet provided a clear timeline for his recovery, but Achilles injuries typically require long rehabilitation periods.

Ekitike shared an emotional message for Liverpool supporters after the setback.

“It’s hard, maybe even unfair… but I’m grateful this is happening to me here, among you. I’m not alone,” he wrote, thanking fans for their support.

France World Cup Squad Setback

The Ekitike Achilles tendon rupture also represents a major France World Cup squad setback. France manager Didier Deschamps confirmed the striker will not be part of the squad for the upcoming global tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Deschamps said Ekitike had quickly integrated into the national team setup and had become one of several young players emerging in the squad.

“This injury is a huge blow for him, of course, but also for the France team,” he said, expressing support for the player during his recovery.

Liverpool Champions League Blow

The injury occurred during the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot admitted the situation looked serious immediately after the incident.

“I think we could all see that it didn’t look well and didn’t look good,” Slot said after the match.

The loss of Ekitike adds to Liverpool’s ongoing injury concerns this season, with several key players already sidelined.

Strong Debut Season For Liverpool

Despite the unfortunate setback, Ekitike has enjoyed an impressive debut season after joining Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt last July.

The French forward scored 17 goals and provided six assists in all competitions. In January, he became just the second player after Kenny Dalglish to score in five different competitions during a debut campaign for Liverpool.

He also earned his first international appearance for France last September and had been expected to feature prominently at the World Cup.

Now, with the Hugo Ekitike Achilles injury confirmed, both Liverpool and France must adjust their plans as the young striker begins a lengthy recovery.
