Fans at MA Chidambaram Stadium will be eagerly waiting as Chennai Super Kings take on Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026. The spotlight remains firmly on MS Dhoni, who has been sidelined since the start of the season due to a calf strain.
Dhoni was ruled out of the first two weeks of the tournament, and although he has resumed training with the squad, reports suggest he may still need more time before returning to competitive action.
Dhoni’s training suggests cautious comeback
The veteran wicketkeeper-batter was seen taking part in light practice sessions ahead of the clash at Chepauk. However, he mostly took throwdowns in the nets and avoided intense drills.
Notably, Dhoni did not wear wicketkeeping gloves during training, indicating that his calf might not yet be ready for the lateral movement required behind the stumps. Because of this, the team management is likely to make a late call on his availability for the match.
How CSK have adapted without Dhoni
In Dhoni’s absence, Sanju Samson has taken over wicketkeeping duties for CSK. The former Rajasthan Royals batter recently scored a century in CSK’s victory over Delhi Capitals, helping the team end a three-match losing streak.
The side has also relied on finishers such as Shivam Dube and Jamie Overton, while young players like Dewald Brevis have been given opportunities in the lineup.
Impact Player option for Dhoni?
Former New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan believes CSK could ease Dhoni back into the side using the Impact Player rule.
According to McClenaghan, Dhoni could come in as a late batting substitute, allowing him to contribute with quick runs without placing too much physical strain on his recovering calf.
However, former India opener Aakash Chopra has argued that Dhoni’s biggest value lies in his leadership and tactical awareness behind the stumps. Using him only as an Impact Player would mean CSK miss his on-field guidance for bowlers.
All eyes on Chepauk
With the stadium expected to be packed for the high-profile IPL 2026 clash, fans will hope to see Dhoni back in CSK colours once again.
Whether he returns in the playing XI or continues his recovery, the Chepauk crowd will be watching closely as CSK look to build momentum against KKR.
