Chennai, India: Chennai Super Kings finally got their IPL 2026 campaign up and running with a commanding win over Delhi Capitals at Chepauk, riding on a sensational unbeaten century from Sanju Samson and a match-winning spell from Jamie Overton.
Samson was the undisputed star of the night, smashing a brilliant 115* off 56 balls—his fourth IPL hundred and first for CSK. The knock, filled with timing and composure, reflected both his class and determination to repay the franchise’s faith after his high-profile move. “This century means a lot personally,” Samson said, adding that he felt a strong sense of responsibility to deliver.
He also praised the team environment, noting how quickly he felt at home despite being new to the setup.
The innings was anchored by a crucial partnership with young Ayush Mhatre, whose fluent half-century drew praise from Samson for his maturity and composure. Late fireworks from Shivam Dube powered CSK to an imposing 212, their second 200-plus total of the season.
In response, Delhi Capitals started brightly, but a middle-order collapse derailed their chase. After a brisk opening stand, wickets fell in clusters, leaving the visitors struggling to keep up with the required rate. Despite a fighting half-century from Tristan Stubbs, the target proved too steep.
Overton turned the game decisively with a superb spell of 4/18, exploiting the tacky surface with precision and pace. He was well supported by Anshul Kamboj, who chipped in with three wickets, as CSK tightened their grip.
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad lauded the team’s all-round effort, highlighting improved batting consistency and sharp fielding as key factors. Delhi skipper Axar Patel, meanwhile, admitted that poor fielding and crucial lapses cost his side the game.
The victory not only ends CSK’s losing streak but also injects fresh momentum into their campaign, much to the delight of the Chepauk faithful.
