Ryan Williams Set for India Debut as Blue Tigers Face Hong Kong in Kochi

Kochi: India will look to salvage pride and end their disappointing qualifying campaign on a positive note when they face Hong Kong on Tuesday, with all eyes on the expected debut of Ryan Williams.

The match at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium carries little bearing on standings, as Singapore have already secured top spot and qualification for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. However, for India, it represents a chance to avoid finishing the group without a win and to begin rebuilding momentum.

Head coach Khalid Jamil has largely stuck with the core group that featured throughout the campaign, hoping experience and match rhythm from the ongoing domestic season can help deliver a consolation result. The Blue Tigers are currently bottom of the table and desperate to end a difficult run on a positive note.

Williams in Focus

Much of the attention will centre on Williams, who is finally set to earn his first international cap after earlier delays due to paperwork and a minor injury concern. The winger is expected to bolster India’s attacking options, an area that has troubled the side throughout the campaign. His pace, dribbling and eye for goal could provide the spark India have lacked in the final third.

Midfield creativity will be crucial in feeding Williams, with players like Lallianzuala Chhangte and Jeakson Singh likely to play key roles in linking play.

Hong Kong in Transition

Hong Kong arrive in Kochi in transition following the departure of former coach Ashley Westwood. They too are out of contention but will aim to finish strongly. Their main threat is striker Everton Camargo, who has scored 11 goals in 23 appearances and will test India’s defensive pairing.

Head-to-Head

India hold the edge historically, winning eight of the 17 meetings between the sides, while Hong Kong have four victories and five matches have ended in draws.

With qualification hopes gone, pride is now the main motivation. For India, a win would not only end the campaign on a brighter note but also mark the start of a new chapter — one potentially led by the promising debut of Ryan Williams.
