Khalid Jamil has announced a 28-member preliminary squad for the upcoming Unity Cup 2026 as preparations intensify for India’s international campaign.
The Blue Tigers are scheduled to assemble in Bengaluru for a short training camp following the conclusion of the Indian Super League season before travelling to London on May 24 for the tournament.
Big Opportunity Ahead for the Blue Tigers
The Unity Cup is expected to provide India with valuable international exposure ahead of major competitions later this year, including the SAFF Championship.
India, currently ranked 136th in the FIFA rankings, will face Jamaica in the second semi-final on May 27, while Nigeria will take on Zimbabwe in the other last-four clash.
Speaking about the tournament, Jamil said the competition would help the players adapt to stronger international opponents and improve confidence at a higher level.
Experienced Names Return to the Squad
The preliminary squad features several experienced internationals, including captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, defender Sandesh Jhingan, winger Lallianzuala Chhangte and forward Manvir Singh.
Midfielder Anirudh Thapa also made a notable return to the national setup, strengthening India’s midfield options ahead of the tournament.
Blend of Youth and Experience
Jamil’s selection reflects a balance between senior players and emerging talents from the Indian Super League.
Youngsters such as Hrithik Tiwari, Ricky Shabong and Suhail Ahmad Bhat earned opportunities after impressive domestic performances, while established stars are expected to provide leadership during the competition.
The coach will trim the squad down to 23 players before India departs for London.
