Caf decision on Afcon title sparks internal backlash

The controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has deepened after a senior member of the Confederation of African Football publicly criticised the decision to strip Senegal national football team of their title.

‘Abject’ decision slammed

CAF executive committee member Augustin Senghor labelled the ruling “abject” and called for it to be denounced. He argued that football results should be decided on the pitch, not through administrative decisions.

Senegal had originally beaten Morocco national football team 1-0 in the final, with Pape Gueye scoring the winner in extra time after Brahim Diaz missed a late penalty.

However, CAF later ruled the match a 3-0 forfeit win for Morocco after Senegal players briefly walked off in protest during stoppage time.

Senegal to take legal route

The Senegalese Football Federation has confirmed it will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, insisting the ruling is unprecedented and lacks legal grounding.

Officials remain confident the decision can be overturned, with strong claims that the trophy should remain with Senegal.

Morocco defend verdict

The Moroccan Football Federation has backed CAF’s ruling, stating it reinforces respect for competition rules and ensures consistency in global football governance.

New Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi described the title as “well-deserved” but shifted focus towards preparing for future competitions.

Wider criticism and global angle

The situation has drawn criticism beyond Senegal. Veteran coach Claude Le Roy questioned CAF’s leadership and governance, even pointing towards the influence of Gianni Infantino.

Meanwhile, CAF president Patrice Motsepe defended the process, stressing the importance of integrity, fairness, and equal treatment across all nations.

A dispute far from settled

With legal proceedings set to follow, the Afcon saga is far from over. What began as a dramatic final has now turned into one of the most controversial administrative battles in football history, with the final outcome likely to be decided off the pitch.
