Bayern, Atletico surge as Liverpool stunned in Champions League

German champions Bayern Munich and Spanish giants Atletico Madrid moved a step closer to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League with emphatic wins in their round-of-16 first-leg matches on Tuesday, while Liverpool FC suffered a shock defeat and FC Barcelona needed a late penalty to avoid loss.

Bayern run riot in Bergamo

Bayern Munich produced a clinical performance to thrash Atalanta BC 6–1 despite leaving star striker Harry Kane on the bench.

Michael Olise scored twice, while Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson, Josip Stanisic and Jamal Musiala also found the net as the German champions dominated throughout. The convincing victory puts Bayern firmly in control of the tie heading into the second leg.

Atletico punish Spurs in Madrid

Atletico Madrid raced to a blistering start against Tottenham Hotspur, scoring three times in the opening 15 minutes before sealing a 5–2 victory.

Goals from Marcos Llorente, Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez exposed defensive errors by Tottenham, including costly mistakes from debutant goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Defender Robin Le Normand added another as the Spanish side took a commanding advantage into the return leg.

Galatasaray stun Liverpool

In Istanbul, Galatasaray SK shocked Liverpool FC with a 1–0 win.
Mario Lemina scored the decisive goal with a seventh-minute header, giving the Turkish champions a slender but valuable advantage ahead of the second leg at Anfield.

Barcelona rescue late draw

Newcastle United FC looked set for a memorable victory against FC Barcelona after Harvey Barnes struck in the 86th minute.
However, Barcelona snatched a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time when teenage sensation Lamine Yamal converted a penalty in the 96th minute following a foul on Dani Olmo, leaving the tie evenly poised ahead of the second leg.
