League One side Port Vale F.C. produced one of the biggest shocks of this season’s FA Cup by defeating Premier League outfit Sunderland A.F.C. 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years.
The decisive moment came in the 28th minute when New Zealand international Ben Waine reacted quickest to head home after Sunderland failed to clear a corner. The goal turned out to be the only shot on target for the hosts but proved enough to secure a famous victory.
Despite sitting bottom of League One, Port Vale delivered a determined defensive performance to hold off their top-flight opponents and claim their first FA Cup quarter-final appearance since 1954.
After the match, Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris admitted his team failed to seize their chance. “Congratulations to our opponent. They played with intensity and patience… We had chances but it wasn’t enough to win the game,” he said.
For Port Vale, managed by Jon Brady, the victory marks a remarkable moment in what has otherwise been a difficult season, giving the club and its fans a memorable FA Cup night at Vale Park.
