Mumbai Indians Thrash Gujarat Giants by Nine Wickets in WPL Run-Fest

Mumbai, Jan 14: Mumbai Indians continued their complete dominance over Gujarat Giants with a commanding nine-wicket victory at the DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai, on Tuesday in the Women’s Premier League 2026. The win extended MI’s flawless head-to-head record against Gujarat to 8–0.

Earlier, Gujarat Giants posted a formidable 192/5, powered by a strong finish that saw them collect 62 runs in the final five overs, including 23 off the last over. Beth Mooney and Kanika Ahuja provided stability at the top, but the turning point came when Ayushi Soni was tactically retired out, allowing Bharti Fulmali to unleash a late assault alongside Georgia Wareham. Despite Shabnim Ismail’s disciplined spell, Mumbai’s bowlers struggled to contain the death-over surge.

Chasing 193 on a batting-friendly surface, Mumbai Indians lost G Kamalini early, followed by Hayley Matthews, who struck a quick 22 in the powerplay. The chase was then expertly rebuilt by captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Amanjot Kaur, who took MI to 88/2 at the halfway stage. Amanjot’s fluent 40 off 26 balls laid the platform before Nicola Carey joined Harmanpreet to completely take control.

Harmanpreet produced a captain’s knock, remaining unbeaten on 71 off 43 balls, while Carey smashed 38 off 23 deliveries*, ensuring MI cruised home with overs to spare. Gujarat’s bowlers struggled for breakthroughs, and costly fielding lapses—including three dropped catches of Harmanpreet—proved decisive.
In the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet was named Player of the Match and also claimed the Orange Cap.

Kaur also etched her name into the record books by becoming only the second batter in WPL history to complete 1,000 runs, after teammate Nat Sciver-Brunt.

She admitted Mumbai conceded too many runs with the ball but praised the team’s fearless batting and the impact of young players.

Gujarat skipper Ashleigh Gardner rued missed chances, stating that 193 should have been a winning total, while acknowledging Bharti Fulmali’s impressive batting effort.
